Chin Augmentation
Chin Augmentation assists in making the face look well proportioned, and more balanced. There are many Chin Augmentation procedures, but the two most popular ones are:
1. Augmentation with silicone implant
This is a popular procedure for patients who require little to medium degree of augmentation – height not exceeding 0.5 millimeters. This is considered a simple surgery. It lasts about 45 minutes with a local anesthetic. The patient may leave immediately after the surgery.
2. Augmentation by adjusting the chin/mandible bone
This procedure is used in patients with extremely short chin. The surgery extends the chin/mandible bone forward, under a general anesthesia. The procedure lasts about 2 hours.
Patient is required to spend 1-2 nights in the hospital with recovery within 2-3 weeks.
The positions of the Chin Augmentation wound are:
1. Inside the mouth – a very popular procedure due to hidden scar.
2. Underneath the chin – not popular because the scar is clearly visible
Post Operative Care
1. In the case where the incision was made inside the mouth, regularly use antiseptic mouth wash during the first week to keep the wound clean.
2. If incision is located underneath the chin, clean the external wound twice each day after being released from hospital. Keep wound dry for 2-3 days.
3. Liquid diet such as soups, shakes, etc. for first few days. Eat soft food for 7-10 days.
